When Medicine Fails Women

About this course

Gender bias in healthcare continues to create disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for women across clinical settings. Despite growing awareness, research shows that women are more likely to be misdiagnosed or dismissed when presenting with symptoms—particularly in conditions such as cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, and chronic pain. This course equips interprofessional healthcare teams with evidence-based strategies to identify and mitigate bias, apply gender-aware assessment tools, and promote equitable treatment practices. Through real-world examples, learners will examine the systemic, interpersonal, and cultural factors that perpetuate inequities and explore actionable steps to improve diagnostic accuracy, communication, and trust in patient care.

At the completion of this activity, healthcare providers will be able to:

  • Identify at least three clinical scenarios where gender bias contributes to delayed or inaccurate diagnosis in women, particularly in cardiovascular, autoimmune, and pain-related conditions.
  • Describe evidence-based strategies to mitigate gender bias in clinical decision-making, including the use of gender-inclusive diagnostic criteria and patient-centered communication techniques.
  • Explain the systemic and interpersonal factors that perpetuate gender disparities in treatment.
  • Identify two interventions shown to improve equity in care delivery.
  • Summarize the psychosocial and functional consequences of gender bias in healthcare.
  • Apply gender-aware assessment tools and referral pathways to improve diagnostic accuracy and timely treatment for women presenting with complex or atypical symptoms.
  • Collaborate within interprofessional teams to recognize and address implicit gender bias in clinical workflows, implementing at least one team-based strategy to improve equity in patient care and outcomes
