Cancer Chronicles: An Immersive Journey Through Patient Care

About this course

Cancer patients often receive care outside the oncology clinic, in primary care offices, emergency departments, rehabilitation settings, pharmacies, and behavioral health appointments, with treatment side effects and needs that reach well beyond the diagnosis. This continuing education course uses a whole-person, case-based approach to cancer patient care across the full care continuum, from active treatment through survivorship. You will learn to recognize common side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy in non-oncology settings, apply safe care principles for immunocompromised patients, and distinguish acute, subacute, and long-term treatment effects. The course also covers the psychosocial, cognitive, and caregiver challenges that come with cancer treatment, and the role of oncology nurse navigators in keeping care connected. With navigation-informed communication strategies, you will be better prepared to coordinate with oncology teams, address systemic barriers, and strengthen interdisciplinary cancer care so patients and families receive consistent, comprehensive support wherever they seek care.

What you will learn

At the completion of this activity, healthcare providers will be able to:

  • Identify key roles and responsibilities of oncology nurse navigators across the cancer care continuum.
  • Recognize at least three common chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy side effects that may present in non-oncologic clinical settings.
  • Apply safe care principles for immunocompromised patients, including infection prevention and medication considerations.
  • Describe psychosocial, cognitive, and caregiver challenges commonly experienced during cancer treatment.
  • Apply navigation informed communication strategies to coordinate care effectively with oncology teams.
  • Differentiate between acute, subacute, and long-term treatment effects and their impact on physical therapy, mental health, primary care, and other specialties.
  • Evaluate systemic barriers to coordinated cancer care and propose strategies to improve interdisciplinary collaboration.
