This course examines empiric antibiotic therapy, antimicrobial stewardship, and antimicrobial resistance while also reviewing the pharmacology and mechanisms of action of major antibiotic classes. Participants will explore how antibiotic therapy is selected, evaluated, and optimized in clinical practice. A shorter stewardship-focused version of this course without the antibiotic pharmacology lessons is also available.

Antibiotics are among the most frequently prescribed medications in clinical practice, yet inappropriate antibiotic selection, dosing, and duration remain common contributors to adverse drug events and antimicrobial resistance. This course examines the foundations of empiric antibiotic therapy, the principles of antimicrobial stewardship, and the mechanisms that drive antimicrobial resistance. Participants will also review the pharmacology, mechanisms of action, and clinical uses of major antibiotic classes, including cell wall inhibitors, protein synthesis inhibitors, quinolones, folic acid antagonists, urinary tract antiseptics, and antimycobacterial agents. Practical considerations for antibiotic selection, dosing, and duration are discussed to support rational prescribing decisions and safe, effective patient care.
