Meets Nevada Requirement (Effective January 1, 2024): Physicians delivering or supervising emergency medical services, or practicing primary care (family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, or midwifery), must complete at least 2 hours of training on stigma, discrimination, and unrecognized bias related to individuals living with or at high risk of acquiring HIV. Proof of this training is required within 2 years of starting such care. (NV SB-439, enacted 6/15/2023).

At the completion of this activity, healthcare providers will be able to:  

  • Define HIV-related stigma, discrimination, and unrecognized bias and explain their impact on individuals and communities affected by HIV. 
  • Recognize the various forms of HIV stigma and discrimination present in healthcare settings and their consequences on patient outcomes. 
  • Identify the drivers of stigma and discrimination in healthcare, including misconceptions about HIV transmission and moral judgments about those at risk of HIV. 
  • Recall the legal rights and protections available to individuals living with HIV in healthcare settings. 
  • Analyze the impact of healthcare provider bias on the quality of care delivered to individuals with HIV. 
  • Formulate interprofessional communication strategies that promote collaboration among healthcare teams to foster an inclusive, stigma-free environment in healthcare settings by reflecting on personal biases and institutional practices. 

 At the completion of this activity, assistants, aids, support staff, and pharmacy technicians will be able to:  

  • List common types of stigma and discrimination faced by people with HIV. 
  • Identify how stigma and bias in healthcare can affect the care of people with HIV. 
  • Recall key legal protections for people living with HIV in healthcare settings.
